Class 17

Info

Nicknamed the “Clayton” after its manufacturer, the Class 17 is one of the more distinctive British diesel locomotives, thanks to its low-slung profile and central cab design. Powered by twin Paxman 6ZHXL engines delivering a combined 900hp, the Class 17 was equipped with electric transmission and built with visibility and versatility in mind.

Despite its innovative design, the Class 17 suffered from reliability issues, and its time on the mainline was short. Introduced in the early 1960s, most were withdrawn by the end of the decade, replaced by more dependable alternatives as British Rail refined its diesel fleet.

However, the Class 17 remains a fascinating chapter in British railway history. Its unique silhouette and experimental spirit have secured its place in the hearts of enthusiasts. Only 1 survive's today in preservation, standing as rare reminder of a transitional era in locomotive development.
